The neoclassical New York City Ballet headlines at this opulent theater, which Philip Johnson designed to resemble a jewel box. NYCB has two seasons: Winter begins just before Thanksgiving and features more than a month of performances of George Balanchine’s magical The Nutcracker; the repertory season continues through February. The eight-week spring season usually begins in April. The best seats are in the first ring, where the music comes through loud and clear, but—even better—one can enjoy the dancers’ patterns from anywhere in the theater. Choreography is by Balanchine (the 89-by-58-foot stage was made to his specifications); Jerome Robbins; Peter Martins, the company’s ballet master in chief; and Christopher Wheeldon, the resident choreographer, whose innovative work has injected the troupe with new life.
