Officially called Saint Jacques Le Majeur, but known to everyone simply as the Eglise du Jésus, this tiny Jesuit-built church is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and a must-see for anyone with even a passing interest in the decorative style of that period. Its narrow and towering façade was restored in the 19th century, more than 200 years after the initial construction of a church on this site, and it was during this period that the ornate blue and yellow Baroque decorations were added. Once inside, examples of symbolic Baroque artistry are evident quite literally from floor to ceiling (starting with the simple tiles beneath your feet, representing the material world of men, and ascending to the elaborately frescoed ceilings, where lambent depictions of paradise illuminate the half light).
