Parc du Château review Rate it

Casting its shadow over the eastern quarter of the old town, this craggy hill may no longer be the site of the chateau from which it takes its name but it does boast a well-tended park, not to mention the definitive view of Nice and the Baie des Anges. If you don't have the puff to climb the several flights of stairs that tackle the 90-metre (295-foot) ascent from Montée Lesage, there is a lift service that operates from within a grotto-like corridor next to the 19th-century Tour Bellanda (the only vestige of the former castle). The journey up costs €1.10, which is about the same as the bottle of water you'll inevitably consume if you attempt to do it on foot. At the top, you'll find breezy green spaces, a children's playground, plenty of shady nooks and an artificial waterfall. The northernmost reaches are occupied by two cemeteries, one of them reserved for the city's Jewish residents, the other the final resting place of restless Garibaldi.
