A leafy link between the old and new towns, Nice's oldest public garden acts as a kind of respirator, filtering out the pollution and noise of passing traffic, and providing local residents with a shady spot to escape the heat and catch their breath. Looking around on a typical summer's morning, this would seem to be where many Niçois who either don't have or have grown tired of their own balconies come to read the paper, watch the world pass by and possibly venture a game of chess or cards. Sculptor Bernard Venet's giant steel arc, intended as a tribute to Nice's famous coastline, is the focal point of the park.
