The smart, well curated museum of archaeology devotes two floors of open-plan exhibition space to a dazzling array of ceramics, coinage and assorted weaponry that traces a timeline through Nice's history from 1100 BC to the Middle Ages. Outside, you'll find ancient history on a larger, less polished scale, in the form of the first- to fourth-century ruins of Cemenelum. Here, the remnants of Roman public baths and a system of paved streets are dominated by the more imposing (and still easily discernible) vestiges of a 400-seat amphitheatre. This latter has now been given the thumbs-up as a venue for the Nice Jazz Festival.
