Often spoken of in the same breath as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and Jenny Holzer, the American Keith Haring, who died in 1990, has come to be seen as an icon of pop art. Militantly against South Africa’s Apartheid, atomic war, environmental destruction, homophobia and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, he stood out for his enormous productivity, represented by his rapid drawing on the Metro, his paintings and sculptures, often constructed while listening to music. This exhibition brings together over 250 pieces, executed on canvas, tarpaulins and walls. There’s also 15 or so large works displayed at the Centquatre.
