Lichtenstein, 'Expressionism'

The king of adaptation and pastiche, Roy Lichtenstein appropriated American popular culture as much as the great classics of Matisse or Picasso, making over all sorts of images in his own way with the techniques for which he is now famous: enormous canvases, Ben-Day dots and primary colours. While the Centre Pompidou devotes a big retrospective to the Pop Art icon, the Gagosian gallery is also showing a series of paintings and engravings inspired by German expressionism – a little-known collection that Lichtenstein created during the ’70s and ’80s, a period when his work increasingly drew on the history of art.
