Time Out says

5 out of 5 stars

This Centre Pompidou show is the first major retrospective of Paul Klee’s work in France since 1969. It brings together around 250 works by on of the founding figures of modern art, and underlines the carefully constructed irony that infused his creations. It’s an original approach that was inspired by the earliest German romanticism, and particularly the philosopher Friedrich Schlegel. His satiric, almost parodic approach, which aimed to be simultaneously enjoyable and serious, is echoed by Klee’s work on canvas. Through this show we follow his development from early cariacatures to his mature cubist years, via forays into constructivism and primitivism.
