Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues is proud of her roots. Back in 2005 she founded her dance company in the favelas of Rio, and her subsequent productions bear names that testify to her sense of heritage: ‘Ce dont nous sommes faits’ (What We’re Made Of) and now ‘Pindorama’ (a reference to the pre-colonial name for Brazil). A strong communal spirit informs her art, and it’s on stunning display in this performance for an 11-strong ensemble. Dance at its most democratic.
