A little detour off avenue de l'Opéra, down an 18th-century staircase, and you find an unexpected congregation spread across the pavement: half are here for this little bar near the Comédie Française, half for the adjoining Sicilian pizzeria. There's food to be had at L'Entr'acte too - €10 plates of cheese and charcuterie, standard pastas and so on - but most come to enjoy an early evening glass of house Bourgueil. The interior is tiny, with an equally poky basement, but there's free Wi-Fi and even laptop loans.

DO NOT GO THERE. Don't know whether it was the owner or it's cousin who had been let out of the asylum to cover for August holidays who served us- but by far the worst service I've ever seen. Shouted at us for having luggages and ordering water, and a few xenophobic remarks thrown in for good measure. Awful.
