An artistic couple of the 19th century, known as ‘citizens of freedom’. François Rude, a major sculptor of the 19th century, created the frieze on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris entitled ‘The Departure of Volunteers’: an icon also known worldwide as ‘The Marseillaise’ Sophie Rude, a talented portraitist, long remained in the shadow of her husband but is well represented here.
