Nestled along an unhurried old stone street in an atmospheric area of Paris 11th, round the corner from Métro Ledru-Rollin, is a lovely traditional neighbourhood bistro going by the jolly name of Aux Tontontons Flambeurs. Owners Philippe and Xavier perform well in their role as hosts/chefs, expertly waxing lyrical about their simple, well-priced - and really rather good - offering of South West (of France) and Basque dishes. Pick of Aux Tontontons Flambeurs’ delicacies are the apple and Armagnac foie gras, axoa de veau (minced veal shoulder with Esplette pepper), and the piperade – another typically Basque dish. Big cuts of juicy beef, perfectly formed tariflettes, and grilled fish of the day are also excellent (small) crowd pleasers. African specialties spice up the menu on Saturday nights.
