La Pena del Medio is a new, very friendly tapas bar that replaces the Trois Pièces Cuisine near the Rue de la Poteau. They’ve installed a massive bar and funky coloured tables on which to share those small pleasures of Spanish cooking, tapas, revisited and exquisite. The superb house speciality comes highly recommended: Burgos morcilla [black pudding] with a plate of tomato confit with almonds, basil and a garlic cheese mousse. If you’re starving, go for patatas bravas, tomato bread or an excellent tortilla. If your tastes are more esoteric, there are razor clams with garlic and lemon, grilled prawns or chorizo croquettes. The wine list is all French and Spanish, and big enough to satisfy the most capricious palates. The bill can mount up (between €3.50 and €8 per tapas), but you can find a compromise between savoury barely-mouthfuls and more filling dishes. The team is very friendly and the ambiance generally warm – and if you don’t want to eat you can just come and drink a glass or two, elbows on the bar.
