Time Out dit

5 sur 5 étoiles

A former pupil of Larry Clark and Nan Goldin, Antoine d’Agata has been travelling the world for 20 years. But wherever he goes, the Marseillais photographer is engulfed by the worst impulses of humanity's sleazy underbelly – the world of prostitutes, drunkards, bums and drug addicts. He works as an exile among exiles, witnessing lives without hope, capturing his models without flash during his nighttime travels. Blurred, dream-like, veiled in alcohol and insomnia, his images tell sordid stories in graphic detail.

Whether he’s working in daylight or at night, deep in seedy brothels, in drug dens or the open air, d’Agata always sees a world that is grey, bleak, damned. BAL, the venue for documentary, pays homage to this disturbing work that sets out to show the worst of humanity. Though there is a form of beauty in the darkness: perhaps that which we see where self-destruction is the final form of liberty.

Opening hours: Wed-Fri 12pm-8pm, Sat 11am-8pm, Sun 11am-7pm
