When to go to Paris

Paris's climate, festivals, events and public holidays

By: Time Out editors

In July and August there are often deals on hotels and a good range of free events (such as Paris-Plage), but many family-run restaurants and shops close as the locals go off en vacances. Avoid October, with its fashion weeks and trade shows.

Climate

Paris has a temperate climate, with temperatures pretty much mirroring those of London, give or take a degree or two. Winter sees the temperature dip to a low of 36ºF (2ºC) but it rarely freezes. Paris in the spring is, of course, pretty, but can be wet and squally. Summers are generally pleasantly warm, with variable cloud, reaching an August high of 79ºF (26ºC).

Festivals & events

Paris is the place to come for cultured outdoor events in the balmy summer months. Visitors should try to be in the city for the numerous music – both classical and rock – festivals. In the summer holidays, the Paris-Plage establishes itself on the banks of the Seine to give the city its very own beach. Autumn sees a wine festival in Montmartre, when thousands of bottles are uncorked in village-fête style street parties. In winter, it's ice-skates at the ready for the numerous outdoor rinks.
