Les Catacombes

The only publicly accessible part of the 3,000-km network of subterranean passages that runs under the city. With public burial pits filling up in the era of the Revolutionary Terror, the bones of six million people were also transferred to the catacombs (including those of Marat, Robespierre and their cronies). It’s an extraordinary sight, and not one for the claustrophobic: you descend a spiral staircase that takes you below ground to a mass of bones.
