Though Montparnasse is a far cry from its avant-garde heyday when this restaurant opened in 1927, La Coupole still has some of the old glamour. The people-watching is superb, and the ranks of linen-topped tables, the professional waiters, art deco columns, mosaic floor and the sheer scale still make coming here an event. The set menu offers unremarkable steaks, foie gras, fish and autumn game stews, but the real treat is the shellfish, displayed along a massive counter.
