Jardin du Luxembourg
pl Auguste-Comte, pl Edmond-Rostand or rue de Vaugirard, 6th
The Luxembourg garden is one of the nicest places in the city: part formal, part ‘English garden’, it’s the quintessential Paris park, filled with green chairs and sculptures. The palace at its northern edge was built in the 1620s for Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV. Its Italianate style was intended to remind her of the Pitti Palace in her native Florence. Reworked in the 18th century, it’s now the French parliament’s upper house, the Sénat (guided visits only); the mansion next door (Le Petit Luxembourg) is the residence of the Sénat’s president.
