Musée d’Orsay

1 rue de la Légion-d’Honneur, 7th

The building was originally a train station, designed to coincide with the 1900 Exposition Universelle. Now it’s a huge treasure trove of an art museum, spanning the fertile period between 1848 and 1914. It follows a chronological route, showing links between Impressionist painters and their forerunners: here you’ll find a profusion of famous paintings by Delacroix, Degas, Corot, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Gauguin, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and many others. Running down the centre of the building, a sculpture aisle takes in monuments and maidens, plus outstanding pieces by Carpeaux. The museum runs a full and enterprising series of concerts at lunchtime and in the evening.
