The capital’s oldest department store (it opened in 1848) is also its most swish and user-friendly. The prestigious Balthazar men’s section offers a cluster of designer boutiques, while the Théâtre de la Beauté provides a comfort zone for women. Seven luxury boutiques, occupied by Dior and Chanel among others, take pride of place on the ground floor; escalators take you up to the fashion floor, which has a fabulous selection of global designer labels. The adjacent Grande Epicerie luxury food hall (01.44.39.81.00, www.lagrandeepicerie.fr, 8.30am-9pm Mon-Sat) accommodates its own café and restaurant.
