Centre Pompidou (Musée National d’Art Moderne)

rue St-Martin, 4th

Its primary colours and exposed pipes make the Centre Pompidou (or ‘Beaubourg’) one of the city’s best-known sights. It holds the largest collection of modern art in Europe. Take the escalators to the entirely rehung level four for post-1960s art; level five spans 1905 to 1960. Masterful ensembles let you see the span of Matisse’s career on canvas and in bronze, the variety of Picasso’s invention and the development of cubic orphism by Sonia and Robert Delaunay.

The Centre also screens films, classic and experimental, and has a weekly documentary session. It’s also the venue for the Cinéma du Réel festival in March, which has championed the cause of documentary film.

I was there on July 23, 2007 and it was all open. FYI - go in at ground level, turn to the left and go up the escalator to the "Musee" sign to get to the Modern Art Gallery. Then you show your ticket (if you don't already have a ticket or a Paris Museum Pass, then you need to buy your ticket on the main floor first) and go to the external escalators. (It's obvious where that is once you're on the first floor.) The fourth floor has the "weird" stuff that only a real modern art fan would like. The fifth floor has the "classics" by the more familiar artists that the average person would know. If you're short of time, you might want to just go straight up to the fifth floor. Take your camera -- you are allowed to take photos, but no flash. Also, you can get some great shots of the city from up there. Posted on Aug 23 2007 04:26
