Place des Vosges
The first planned square in Paris (along with its contemporary, place Dauphine) was commissioned in 1605 by Henri IV. Cosy, with red-brick-and-stone arcaded façades and steep slate roofs, it’s quite distinct from the pomp you find in later Bourbon Paris. It’s laid out on a symmetrical plan, with carriageways through the Pavillon de la Reine on the north side and Pavillon du Roi on the south.
