Astier

44 rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud, 11th

This is a bastion of traditional food: the aroma of fine French cooking, unbridled contentment on diners’ faces, frantic ordering across a crowded, unassumingly decorated room. Home-made terrines lead the way, so go for the chicken liver or seafood versions. Tender lamb sweetbreads are served generously with mousseron mushrooms, and the accompanying gratin dauphinois is sinfully good. Book for the bargain lunch menu.

Order their home-cured herrings for starters, and make sure you still have room for the incredible cheese selection which is offered from a cartwheel-sized basket after the main course. An illustrated review which really gets the atmosphere of this resto can be found on www.badaude.typepad.com Posted on Feb 11 2007 17:47
