Right opposite the landmark Charbon, the Mercerie has bare walls – bare everything, in fact – that contain the usual Oberkampf shenanigans of death-wish drinking against a loud, eclectic soundtrack. A DJ programme is lipsticked on to the bar mirror. Happy hour stretches to 9pm, so you can cane the house vodkas and still have enough euros to finish the job after dusk. The back area, with its tea lights, provides intimacy.
