Institut du Monde Arabe

1 rue des Fossés-St-Bernard, 5th

A clever blend of high-tech, steel-and-glass architecture and Arab influences, this Grand Projet was constructed between 1980 and 1987. Shuttered windows, inspired by the screens of Moorish palaces, act as camera apertures according to the amount of available light. Inside you find a collection of Middle Eastern art, archaeological finds and a café. Of particular interest are the collections of urns and masks from Carthage, early scientific tools and 19th-century Tunisian costume and jewellery.
