Jardin des Plantes

Although small and somewhat dishevelled, the Paris botanical garden – which contains more than 10,000 species and includes tropical greenhouses – is worth a visit. Begun by Louis XIII’s doctor as the royal medicinal plant garden in 1626, it opened to the public in 1640. It also comprises the Ménagerie and the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle. Ancient trees include a false acacia planted in 1636 and a cedar in 1734, and there’s an 18th-century spiral yew maze.
