Cardinal Richelieu left this building to Louis XIII, whose widow Anne d’Autriche rechristened it when she moved in with her son, the young Louis XIV. In the 1780s the gardens were enclosed in a three-storey peristyle and filled with cafés, theatres and shops. People of all classes mingled here. Daniel Buren’s modern installation of black-and-white-striped columns occupies the main courtyard.
