Place de la Concorde
The city’s largest square has grand east-west perspectives from the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe, and north-south from the Madeleine to the Assemblée Nationale. Gabriel designed it in the 1750s, along with the two colonnaded mansions astride rue Royale. In 1792 the centre statue of Louis XV was replaced with the guillotine for Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and many more. The square was embellished in the 19th century with fountains and the Luxor obelisk.
