La Conciergerie
2 bd du Palais, 1st
Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned here during the Revolution, as were Danton and Robespierre before their executions. The wealthy had private cells with their own furniture, that they paid for; others were forced to crowd together on straw. In Marie-Antoinette’s cell, the Chapelle des Girondins, are her crucifix, some portraits and a guillotine blade. The Conciergerie looks every inch the forbidding medieval fortress, yet much of the façade was added in the 1850s. The visit takes you through the Salle des Gardes, the medieval kitchens and the Salle des Gens d’Armes, a vaulted Gothic hall constructed between 1301 and 1315.
