Blink and you’ll miss it: the Taverne Henri IV, under new ownership, is a delightful little place, smack bang on the tip of the Ile de la Cité. The emphasis here is on good, simple French fare washed down with a fine glass of wine – all at very reasonable prices. The eggs baked with blue cheese and ham are delectable and a glass of white Beaujolais (€4) even better. If you are having trouble deciding which wine to pick, the hilarious and chatty barman will be happy to make a few suggestions. For the decor, think ‘legal profession’ – dark wooden bar, certificates on the wall, wine bottles on display, and a few dusty books thrown in for good measure.
