When it opened in 2002, many thought the stripped-back interior with visible air-conditioning at this art ‘laboratory’ was a statement. In fact, it was a practical decision motivated by budgetary constraints, but the 1937 building has come into its own as an open-plan space, permitting the coexistence of exhibitions and installations, fashion shows and performances.
