Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

With its meandering paths and vertical cliffs, this lovely park was designed by Adolphe Alphand in the 1860s. A former gypsum quarry, tip and public gibbet, waterfalls now cascade out of a man-made cave. A bridge (cheerfully named Pont des Suicides) crosses the lake to an island crowned by a mini-temple. The park is always popular with kids.

Just the most beautiful park in Paris, with very few of the annoying tourists that you get in the Tuilleries - and you can actually sit on the grass! Only problem is that it's a bit far out, but combine it with a visit to the Cite des Sciences and the Pere-Lachaise cemetary (nowhere near as morbid as it sounds!) on a sunny day.
