Penang Top Five: Chelsia Ng
Flitting in and out of Penang regularly, this Penangite is often seen on stage in Kuala Lumpur or in the media nationwide. Here, Chelsia Ng shares the limelight with five favourite things she enjoys doing and eating on the island.
1. Car Free Sundays at Lebuh Pantai
As a child my parents would take me, along with my brother, cycling around Tanjung Tokong and Pulau Tikus during the weekends. My friends and I would cycle around the neighborhood without a care in the world. Times are very different now compared to the early 90s. Car Free Sundays (7am to 1pm) on Lebuh Pantai, around the Whiteaway building is a great initiative by the Penang State Government. It encourages parents to bring their kids out on a Sunday ride to enjoy fresh air while admiring the heritage streets here. It's definitely better than walking around in a mall for a change!
2. Trishaws at George Town
Trishaws are the best way to see and experience George Town. I love it. My Mom and I still enjoy taking a trishaw ride through the busy streets in town, every now and then. It’s a way to slow things down a little, especially traffic since cars have to slow down to give way to these heavily accessorised, colourful trishaws. Most of all, it’s nice to watch the hustle and bustle of food vendors on the streets from a distance.
3. Bahagian Buku-Buku Lama at Chowrasta Market
It’s a secondhand book haven! I got a lot of my classics from here – Shakespeare, Dickens and Austen. I can spend hours in this place just digging for treasures. And there’s a lot of digging needed since it’s ceiling to floor filled with pre-owned books. More often than not, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what great books you can find there.
4. Kong Th'ng at Jalan Chowrasta
If you don’t know what that is, it’s fresh peanut candy that melts in your mouth. The same uncle who makes this also makes fresh popiah skin. The shop that sells it is located right next to Chowrasta Market on Jalan Chowrasta. This is a must-try if you're around the area. This quaint, tiny shop caters to popiah sellers around Penang. It's a treat to watch him make them fresh!
5. 23 Love Lane
The address itself will make you want to fall in love! The property houses ten beautifully done up suites and will rekindle any dwindling romance. There are gorgeous art pieces on the walls with fruit in baskets around the comfortable sitting areas so guests can help themselves while reading the paper or a book. The whole ambience is that of someone’s gorgeous, welcoming home. I stayed there during the last Chinese New Year Heritage Celebrations and watched the fireworks in the courtyard. It was a very beautiful and memorable experience.
