Penang Botanic Gardens, also known as the waterfall gardens, was established by the British in 1884 on an old granite quarry site. The garden was and still is a site for research and education; however, the garden is now more popular for recreational activities such as jogging, hiking or cycling. The waterfall on-site is privately owned although you can visit upon approval from the Penang Water Authority. Another way of visiting the waterfall is through organised monthly visits by ‘The Friends of the Penang Botanic Gardens’, a non-governmental organisation.
