Celebrity fitness secrets: Amber Chia
What are your favourite ways to keep fit?
I love yoga because it relaxes my mind and releases all the tension and stress in my body. When I want to sweat, I like going on the treadmill and lifting weights to shed fat and tone up my arms. I think it’s important for models to maintain their body shape. A lot of people say that I’m already skinny and that I don’t need to go to the gym, but I think keeping in shape is really important. Being thin and having some muscles at the same time is even sexier.
How often do you frequent the gym?
I think about two to three times a week. It’s not only about beauty, it’s about health as well. When you exercise, it makes you feel better. After frequent exercise you won’t get so tired anymore and that you have all this energy. For me when I stay at home all day and don’t get active, I feel myself getting tired, but going to the gym sort of wakes me up. I don’t know how to explain it but it happens.
What are some of your guilty pleasure foods?
I like a lot of sweet stuff, but I try to cut down on that. I take a lot of protein and cut out carbohydrates and oily food. Dessert is something that’s hard to cut out because I love it. I love chocolates, the cream cheese icing on a carrot cake – I always have to have something sweet after my meal, but when I’m on a diet I only take one bite and let my husband finish off the rest.
Is that difficult?
Not anymore because I know how to control myself now and portion my food. I do avoid heavy meals and eat light ones with small portions like a salad and soup. The most important thing is to keep good eating habits.
Is that the advice you’d give to those trying to lose weight?
Yes. I think if you really enjoy heavy food you have to make some changes and start eating light. Doing this for a few months it will become natural to you and you won’t crave rich food.
What motivates you to keep fit?
My job, because being a professional model you have to maintain your weight and your skin. Modelling has always been something I’ve wanted to do, so I need to look good and keep fit.
Fitness wise, which celebrity do you look up to?
Michelle Yeoh. I think she’s done Malaysia proud, and for her age she’s maintained a well toned body. I definitely hope that when I’m her age I can look like her [laughs]. Syarifah Syazana
