No Eyed Deer
Time Out says
They've been around for 13 years and serve up both Asian and western fare at reasonable prices, and has an unforgettable, somewhat odd name. No Eyed Deer's on the first floor of Prima Tanjung at Jalan Fettes in Tanjung Tokong and popular with families and those possessing a carnivourous appetite.
Through the years, their Laotian laksa with its delicately spicy and tangy soup has been a crowd pleaser and has become a house specialty. However, we decide to tuck into their more meaty dishes and find them quite satisfying.
As a main, besides their Caveman Platter that's enough to feed around four people at RM78+ and consists of lamb and chicken wings, sausages and kebabs, we recommend the Traditional Grilled Steak at RM29.80+. It's a nice portion for one and has uncomplicated flavours of beef within brown gravy, unadorned mash potatos and blanched vegetables. The price is very reasonable and matches the cut of meat they serve.
For those preferring more exotic flavours, they've got beef and chicken briyani, mutton rogen josh and fish dishes such as pan grilled bara mundi. There are also a small selection of pasta, fish and chips and gool old, comforting beef stew with mash. Main dishes start from RM13.80+ and RM24.80+ with a set including dessert.
Although, we have to admit, the place is terific for snacks to go with beers while shooting the breeze after work or on a Sunday. The Eyed Deer Dumplings' from their appetiser menu is made out of minced chicken and prawns wrapped in taufu skin and deep-fried.
A serve of three of these dumplings are RM7.80+. They're juicy with a light crunch from the taufu skin. The clincher is the dipping sauce they come with - a sort of homemade tartare sauce hinting at lemon grass which gives a refreshing, minty flavour. There are also chicken wings, Vietnamese Summer Rolls on Thursdays, nachos, tangy fries served with their special vinaigrette, crispy calamari and Thai pillow toasts. Their starters are from RM5.80+.
The interior of the place itself is simple, fuss-free and its ambience is very casual. However, the proprietor and wait staff are efficient, friendly and endlessly polite. Truly, those qualities plus their value for money dishes sure go a long, long way! Su Aziz
