Behind the decks: DJ Andy Murphy
Cheng Sim shines the spotlight on DJ Andy Murphy as he chats about his style must-haves and other music-related matters.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as big room quality club music with a slice of party.
You have Future Music Festival, Stereosonic and Betterdays in your résumé. What's the ingredient that makes your tracks appealing to fans across continents?
I think sticking to quality house music really appeals to people from all around the world and music can bring people together from all places.
Keeping your tracks and remixes fresh is tough. How do you keep yourself inspired?
I surround myself with great people who inspire me every day and keep my finger on the music pulse by attending events and researching constantly. I also experiment a little with my synth collection, trying to create fresh sounds.
Any music genre that you’d love to dabble in that you haven't already?
I really want to produce something a little deeper. Hopefully something in the works coming up.
You were on the cover of Australia’s GC Mag earlier this year. How important is style in your industry and to you?
Style and fashion go hand in hand with music and it is extremely important to create your own style. It’s normally the first thing that other people see and first impressions last. I love my fashion and have started a new business Lights Fashion Music, which combines my love of fashion and music. I would describe my style as up front class, bending trends to create my own looks and styles.
What are your fashion must-haves?
I love a good jacket and have a huge collection of bow ties.
You recently performed in H-Artistry. How’s the vibe in Penang compared to the clubs you’ve been to?
It was my first time in Penang so I couldn't wait to check it out. I met some new people, tried some amazing food and had a great time. I love the Hennessy parties and I was really excited to be able to perform again for Penang. It’s always a great experience collaborating with people from around the world.

Is there an Andy Murphy way of enjoying Hennessy V.S.O.P?
I love Hennessy V.S.O.P with Ginger or Apple (Hennessy Ginger and Hennessy Apple). I think the signature Hennessy V.S.O.P long drinks makes the perfect party drink.
