With old French advertisements displayed in pride of place on the wine-coloured walls, an interior inspired by train cars, servers who know their stuff, and appealing daily specials (cod in white sauce, flank steak and rolled veggie lasagne), Universal is hard to fault. The sides are as impressive as the mains: delectable fresh spinach or roasted gratin potatoes, cooked with real flair.
