With rock blasting out from the sound system, a fog of cigarette smoke, greasy, cheap grub and barely drinkable wine, the Whale is starving-student heaven. In the loud front room there are pastas and chicken steaks to be devoured; elsewhere, there's chess in the back room plus a cellar gallery specialising in fringe art and photography shows. The bar serves bottled Gambrinus.
