Just inside the Porta Settimiana is an unassuming house, now a restaurant, with a pretty window high on the façade and a granite column embedded in its wall. It is believed to have been the home of Margherita, known as la fornarina, the baker's daughter who reputedly stole the heart of Renaissance genius Raphael and whose seductive portrait hangs in the Palazzo Barberini; the artist couldn't resist staking his claim - his name is inscribed on a bangle on her naked arm.
