From its splendid porticoed exterior to its opulent lobby and its stylish rooms, the Exedra is endlessly glamorous. The rooms run from plush and utterly comfortable to outrageous; many overlook the piazza, all have big beds, chic furnishings and marble bathrooms with Etro bath products. From May to September, the rooftop bar/restaurant and pool offer great views. On the lower level, chunks of the Terme di Diocleziano, discovered while the hotel was being done up, are preserved under glass for guests to view.
There's a suite for all tastes here. The Executive Suite is all macho glamour, in shades of grey and red, with acres of Carrara marble, leather pouffes and a flame-red mosaic-tiled bathroom. The Adam Tihany-designed Royal Suite has a stylish, pared-down feel, with a vast, circular dining room, cocktail bar, terrace and glass-walled jacuzzi with views of the Terme di Diocleziano, and, upstairs, a super-luxe bedroom and office space. The Dalai Lama plumped for the 120sq m (1,300sq ft) Imperial Suite, complete with caramel leather-padded walls, vast bed and hydromassage bath, on a recent trip
