Built on the site of an ancient Roman plebeian cemetery (findings are displayed in the excavation area by the entrance), this 'concept' hotel today caters for an altogether different clientele: mainly business clients - who don't baulk at the rather unpromising location, next to a multi-storey car park and opposite the train station - and diehard design fans. The rooftop - more LA than Rome - is a vast decked area with trendy bar and pool. In the all-white rooms, the bed is set on a low platform, divided from the bathroom by a glass screen; the only splash of colour in sight is the green, turf-effect rugs. Taken over by Radisson a few years ago, there's been no change in the hotel's original image, and its extreme minimalism is starting to feel a little dated.
