It may be true that the Centrale Montemartini contains merely the leftover ancient statuary from the Musei Capitolini but, this being Rome, the dregs are pretty impressive; moreover, the setting itself makes this spot worth a visit. You enter through the headquarters of Rome's electricitycompany, beneath the skeleton of its old gasworks. Inside are fauns and Minervas, bacchic revellers and Apollos, all starkly white but oddly at home against the gleaming machinery of the decommissioned generating station. There's a (variable) extra charge when special exhibitions are being staged here.
