Rome's sluggish contemporary art scene was given a shot in the arm in the 1990s with the opening of a municipal modern art gallery in a stunningly converted brewery. Rechristened MACRO (Museo d'Arte Contemporaneo di Roma), this space will eventually cover 10,000 sq m (107,500 sq ft), thanks to an extension designed by superstar architect Odile Decq, scheduled for completion in summer 2008. MACRO brings big international names to Rome, gives space to young artists and showcases local artists making place-specific art. Shows and events spill over into some of the dramatic space inside the Mattatoio (open 4pm-midnight Tue-Sun during shows) in Testaccio.
