Dominating the skyline, the exterior of this 1970 cathedral is stark, a flowing, sculptural structure (some say it resembles the blades of a washing machine) reaching 198ft (60m) into the sky. The four corner pylons were designed to support millions of pounds of pressure and extend 90ft (27m) down to the bedrock beneath the church. Inside, the staggering structure of the cupola is revealed in 1,500 triangular coffers, in over 128 sizes, meant to distribute the weight of the roof. The trumpets of the huge organ, on a raised pedestal that floats above the congregation, appear capable of blasting down the walls of Jericho. Large corner windows allow views of the city.
