Named after Kenneth Rexroth, MC for the fabled Six Gallery reading that provided a launchpad for the Beat Generation, the Rex is one of the city's most appealing small hotels, taking 20th-century literary salons for inspiration. There are books scattered throughout, and the walls are adorned with caricatures of writers with local ties. Literary events are often held in the back salon, and the modern business centre even has a few antique typewriters. Local artists' work decorates the guest rooms, and guests have access to a spacious gym near the hotel. The tiny Café Andrée serves seasonal cuisine; hotel guests receive a free glass of wine at cocktail hour.
