Slated to reopen in its new Yerba Buena Gardens location in late spring 2008, the Contemporary Jewish Museum is devoted to linking the art of the Jewish community with the community at large. The museum runs educational programmes and shows works by students and established artists, many of them political or controversial in nature. Its new home, in a Willis Polk power substation that dates to 1907, has been in the planning stage for the better part of a decade. Architect Daniel Libeskind - in the news for his part in the controversy over the structure to replace the Twin Towers in New York - is responsible for the black box design.
