Formerly the Chinese Historical Society Museum, this facility opened in 2001 in the historic Chinese YWCA building, which was designed by renowned local architect Julia Morgan and completed in 1932. The move enabled the museum to continue and expand its mission of promoting the understanding of Chinese history. Displays in English and Chinese follow California's Chinese population from the frontier years to the Gold Rush, through the building of the railroads and the Barbary Coast opium dens.
