Created by nine artists, this colourful hotel, across from the ornate Chinatown gate, succeeds in being both fun and funky. Now part of the Kimpton chain, it's a leader in 'green hotel' practices. Rooms offer organic cotton bed linens and 'Earthly Beds' made entirely of recycled materials; the seventh-storey 'Eco-Floor' has special water- and air-filtration systems and water-saving devices. Also on the hotel's eclectic menu are nightly tarot readings, fresh cookies and free drinks in the lobby. Much of the joy, though, is in the design quirks: the small 'Zen Dens' have incense, books on Buddhism and daybeds, and there are celebrity suites designed by Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana and even comedienne Kathy Griffin.
