Part of the Kimpton group, the Monaco is much more down to earth than its swanky neighbour, the Clift. But that doesn't mean it's boring: rooms feature striped wallpaper, huge mirrors and beds with silk canopies, and there are funky touches such as animal-print robes, iHomes and flat-screen TVs. Thoughtful extras include complimentary wi-fi, and free wine and cheese receptions every night. It's also a pet-friendly hotel: you can even request a goldfish for your room. The location is great, right near Union Square and the entertainment district, but with the Grand Café and Spa Equilibrium within the hotel, you need never set foot outside the door.
